Accessing a Buffalo TeraStation external storage device was never a problem till the change from Windows XP to Vista. Since Vista was installed on the PC, the username and password must be entered during each access.
The security settings in Windows Vista are at fault here. They determine which request/acknowledgement authentication protocol is used for the network registration. By default, it is set to NTLMv2 (NT LAN Manager Version 2) in Windows Vista. However, the Buffalo TeraStation still uses NTLM. To change the settings, click on the Start button, enter ‘secpol.msc’ in the search field, and press [Enter]. Confirm the launch of the console with ‘Continue’. Finally, double click and open the ‘Security options’ in the ‘Local Policies’ tree. Select ‘Network security: LAN Manager Authentication level’ in the list that is displayed next. A doubleclick on it opens a dialog box. Here, change the ‘Local security settings’ default option from ‘Send NTLMv2 response only’ to ‘Send LM & NTLM use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated’. Click ‘OK’
