Re-accessing network shares Windows XP, Vista

Posted By On 6:02 AM Under ,
For a while now you haven't been able to access your server and network drives from your PC. Everything was working smoothly till Windows displayed the warning "Insufficient memory for this command".

It is likely that the server configuration has been changed. However, this Windows message is misleading, since there is no problem with the memory at all. On the contrary, there is a bottleneck in the Microsoft Lanman server: The value for ‘IRPStackSize’ is too small. Increase this value in the registry to get rid of this problem for good. Open ‘Run...’ in the Start menu, enter ‘regedit’, and click ‘OK’. In the registry editor, navigate to the key ‘HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\LanmanServer\Parameters’. Now look for the ‘IRPStackSize’ D-WORD value in the right part of the window. Double click to open it. If the value does not exist, create it with ‘Edit | New | DWORD value’. Important: be careful with the upper and lower cases in names. Change the base to ‘Decimal’ in the dialog box and enter ‘15’ as the value. Now close the registry and restart the PC. You will now be able to access the server and network drives. If the problem persists, you can increase the value further up to a maximum of ‘50’.
