As a connoisseur of vintage cars, you like taking photos at meets and events. You have a store of pictures by now—and all look somewhat similar: impressive cars, sometimes angled from the front, side or back. Even though they're all good pictures, slide shows of them get quite boring.
Forget the subject as a whole and concentrate on details when you get your next opportunity to photograph vintage cars. Capturing interesting and constructive treasures and curved forms add that extra something to your shots. Besides, it is fun to concentrate on the detailing at times. It could be wheel hubs, hood ornaments, instruments, gearshifts, headlights, chrome detailing— the list is neverending.
Reduced focal lengths of about 50 mm are well suited for closeups since they result in an impression similar to the way the human eye sees. There is no risk of picking up the distortions that are typical of wide-angle lenses.
Try to play with the depth of field. With that, you can specifically draw the attention of the viewer to the desired detail. Striking subjects are also worth capturing: if you take a closer look, grooves and door edges or mudguards and tires can combine to form breathtaking subjects. Thus, the car itself is deemphasized.
