Ensuring that programs autostart when booting in XP & Vista

At system startup, you can prevent programs from running through the ‘Startup’ folder by pressing the [Shift] key. This is however not advisable in the case of a mission-critical PC—the applications need to be loaded even if someone doesn't want them. An entry in the registry can help you deactivate the function of the [Shift] key at system start. For that, go to ‘Run’ in the Start menu, enter ‘regedit’ and click ‘OK’. Navigate to the key ‘HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ Winlogon’. Now click on ‘Edit | New | DWORD value’ and generate an entry called ‘IgnoreShiftOverride’. To edit it, double-click the entry, change its ‘value’ to ‘1’ and click ‘OK’. Close the Registry. From the next system start, the [Shift] key will be inactive. This setting also guarantees that an automatic Windows logon cannot be aborted and thus prevents any undesired access by unauthorized persons to the login dialog.
Caution: If you have locked yourself out, start the computer in Safe Mode and change the necessary settings again.
